Description

Photographed in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire.  Pembroke Castle was initially built in 1093 by Arnulf de Montgomery, and in the late 12th century, the Keep was built and was an outstanding feature and architectural novelty from then onwards.  There is a massive cylindrical tower and unusual stone dome, which puts the Castle in an elevated position and had a natural advantage and superiority when it came to defence.  The Keep was also built to be nearly 80ft high.

Pembroke Castle is however most famous for being the birthplace of Henry VII, the founder of the Tudor Dynasty, and Britain’s only Welsh King.

The Castle Gatehouse, pictured here, has a complex barbican and three portcullises.  Such a grand and splendid building and completely irresistible to a photographer!
